A Letter to Mrs. Roosevelt

                                                                Hi Gang!
This week's book report is..........(drum roll please!) A Letter to Mrs. Roosevelt. So lets get started!

Margo Bandini lived during the great depression. One day her little brother Charlie tried to stop a fight that broke out during recess. He got kicked in the knee. Everyone thought he was going to be fine but later that night his knee turned purple and he couldn't walk. So they had to take him to the hospital. The Doctor told them that Charlie had to have an operation or else he would never be able to walk again. Of course they told the doctor to go ahead with the operation. The operation was a success but Charlie was so weak that no one thought he would live. But he did and when he finally came home it was a few days before school started.

Once school started Margo and her friend Rosa were kept busy but they still had time to look over Margo's post card collection and talk about "Eleanor Everywhere".  (Mrs. Roosevelt )  When Margo went to go play with Rosa she saw a Sheriff Sale sign on her best friends door. Which meant that Rosa's family had only two weeks to pay the bank. Then they were thrown out if they couldn't pay. But Rosa still kept her happy smile even though people laughed at her.

One night Charlie came into Margo's room, crying "It's all my fault!"  Charlie had overheard Papa say that the bank was going to put a Sheriff Sale sign on the door because they couldn't pay for Charlie's hospital bills. Margo ran to the stairs so she could listen to what was going on.  They were five hundred dollars in debt. Margo started crying. Papa called her to his side and told her what was going on. Just as Charlie came down crying "It's all my fault.  I'm sorry!" Pretty soon the Sheriff came to put a sheriff sign on the door.

For a school project they had to write a letter to someone they most admired. Rosa picked Amelia Earhart, Margo couldn't decide who she wanted to write.  When she went to  Mr. Frappa's store he said to read some of the newspaper, the part that was written by E. D. Kirby. So she did just that.  The person, E. D. Kirby mostly talked about was Eleanor Roosevelt, the president's wife. So Margo decided to write to Mrs. Roosevelt. In her letter Margo told her about what was going on and how they were so far behind on their rent and how one of the camps Mr. Roosevelt started should be called CCC. Finally, she talked about why she most admired Mrs. Roosevelt. Right before she was about to close the letter she added her Papa's war medal and said that she hoped it would bring them good luck.

When Margo handed in her letter her Teacher looked to see who it was for. She gasped in surprise and then smiled a small smile that seemed to mean that she knew this person very well. She went right up to Margo and said "I will personally make sure this gets to Mrs. Roosevelt!" Margo and Rosa had a race to see who would get a reply first. But the next day when Margo got home from school the sheriff was there.

She ran to the door but everyone was smiling and happy because Mrs. Roosevelt had answered! She watched with joy as the sheriff took down the sign. The next day at school she asked the teacher how she got the letter there so fast. And the teacher said that she was E. D. Kirby and she talked to Mrs. Roosevelt almost everyday. Margo couldn't believe what her teacher a.k.a. E. D. Kirby was telling her. In the end everything worked out and the sheriff took Rosa's s sign down too.

Hope you enjoyed! See you next time.
